There’s something instantly welcoming about PY Café - the soft light filtering through the windows, the mix of wooden furniture and pastel tones, and that cheerful hum of conversation that fills the air. It had an effortless charm that made it one of Pondicherry’s most loved spots for a relaxed meal or a long afternoon drink. Even though they served alcohol only on weekends, the café’s easygoing ambience made every visit feel like a small celebration in itself.
Every detail at PY Café felt personal - the way sunlight played across the pastel walls, the comforting familiarity of the wooden tables, and the warm staff who always seemed to remember regulars. It was ideal for anyone craving a quiet breakfast, a long afternoon coffee, or a simple slice of cake with a book in hand. Their menu balanced café classics with a few hearty plates, striking just the right note between indulgence and simplicity.
A gorgeous platter that truly showcased balance and freshness. Lavash, falafel, pita bread, and a bright tabbouleh salad were paired with hummus and a punchy tomato salsa. Each component worked beautifully on its own but came together even better - soft pita dipped in creamy hummus, a bite of crisp falafel, and a spoonful of salad to cut through it all. Light, wholesome, and an absolute must-try.
Beer-battered calamari done right - crisp on the outside, perfectly tender within. The coating was light enough to let the squid’s sweetness shine through, and the in-house aioli on the side added a smooth, garlicky note that elevated every bite. Simple but perfectly executed.
This dish came highly recommended by the owner, Jacqueline Kapur, and it truly lived up to the hype. The pork was seared beautifully and cooked to a perfect blush. Tender, juicy, and flavourful. The mashed potatoes that came alongside were buttery and silky, complementing the meat perfectly. It was one of those dishes that stayed with you long after you left.
I wouldn’t call myself a chai person, but this drink changed my mind. The subtle spice blend gave it a soothing warmth even when served cold, and it carried a lovely aroma that stayed till the last sip. If you love chai, this one’s a no-brainer.
Fresh, vibrant, and the perfect pick-me-up. The orange added brightness, the carrot a bit of sweetness, and the ginger tied it all together with a hint of warmth. It was refreshing without being sugary, ideal for Pondicherry’s weather.
Another refreshing drink, this one lived up to its name. Crisp, citrusy, and wonderfully cooling, exactly what you’d want after walking around in the town’s humid afternoons.
PY Café was one of those places that made you slow down to savour your meal, to talk, to simply enjoy being there. Between the well-balanced food, the cheerful service, and the easy-going vibe, it captured the heart of Pondicherry’s café culture beautifully. It’s sad to see it no longer around, but for those who’ve been, the memory of its sunny afternoons and flavour-packed plates still lingers.
